Artist Statement

MELLE. is a lesbian dance-theater company co-directed by Amelia Rose Estrada and Elle Jansen. We draw on vocabularies from contemporary dance and physical theater to make dramaturgically-driven performances that explore femininity, memory, intimacy, and queerness. We use archival and imagined queer history to develop work that narrates desire, kinship, and bittersweet memories of the lesbian community across time. Our choreographic vocabulary and aesthetic values rigor, athleticism, intricate gestural and dynamic partner work. In our projects, props and set pieces are integral storytelling tools that support the world building of our productions. Collaboration is central to our company ethos, and we aim to work with artists from various mediums to create interdisciplinary performances. In addition to our production projects, we are dedicated to contributing to our artistic community by producing and curating work-in-progress showcases that allow choreographers to present new and reimagined movement driven pieces.
